Yearly Activities

Our year has three seasons. Each one focuses on a different aspect of our program and all are filled with fun activities!

Advancement and Regattas

Rank advancement is a hands-on journey from beginner to confident maritime leader, designed to turn curiosity about the water into real skill and responsibility. Starting with simple seamanship and safety, Scouts gradually learn navigation, boat handling, teamwork, and leadership by actually doing—sailing, cruising, teaching others, and leading projects. Each step up builds independence and confidence, culminating in the Quartermaster rank, which represents mastery of nautical skills and the ability to plan and lead meaningful adventures. Even if you’ve never stepped on a boat before, the rank system is built to welcome newcomers and grow them into capable, trusted leaders on and off the water.

Regattas are where all that learning comes alive in exciting, fast-paced events that feel part competition, part festival, and part adventure. Ships from different areas gather to race sailboats, test seamanship skills, solve navigation challenges, and show off teamwork in friendly rivalry. Events might include sailing races, knot-tying relays, rowing, marlinspike seamanship, or safety drills—all designed to be fun, challenging, and social. Regattas give Scouts a chance to prove what they know, learn from others, and build friendships, making them some of the most memorable and motivating experiences in the Sea Scout program.

Summer Cruise

Imagine spending a whole week living on the water—waking up to sunrise over the bay, learning to sail and steer the boat yourself, swimming off the side on hot afternoons, and laughing with friends under the stars at night. A week-long Mariner Scout boating trip is equal parts adventure, confidence-building, and fun: you learn real skills like navigation, knot-tying, and teamwork while exploring new places, docking in cool harbors, and cooking meals together onboard. It’s a chance to unplug, feel strong and capable, and be part of a supportive crew of girls who encourage each other, try new things, and make memories that feel way bigger than a normal summer week.

Community Service and Fundraising

Selling Girl Scout cookies and taking part in community events like the Redwood City Port Fest and coastal clean-up days are fun, hands-on ways Mariner Scouts give back to the communities that support them. Fundraising helps make sailing trips, training, and gear possible, while community events let Scouts show appreciation by volunteering, protecting the coastline, and sharing their love of the water with others. Together, these activities build teamwork, responsibility, and pride—showing that being a Mariner Scout is not just about adventure, but about service and caring for the community and environment that make those adventures possible.
